Most of us would have seen this colourful wheel, behind the drawing book, with colours pack or in any art shop. These days this color wheel is commonly seen in Instagram reels and YouTube shorts by fashionistas. Have you wondered what it is and how it would help you, if so then this blog is for you.
We are familiar with contrast colours, we love the combinations of contrast colours like red and green, blue and orange especially our mothers quoting colour combinations while buying their sarees or admiring others and end up buying the same combinations for years and not giving a chance for other colours. If you are bored with these combinations, let's dig deep into different colours and up our styling game.

The Color theory is the study of how colours interact, mix, and affect each other and how people perceive them. While it is often associated with artists and designers, colour theory can be useful for everyone in various aspects of daily life.
Let's get familiarised with the colour vocabulary before digging deep :
Colour - Colour is nothing but a reflected light, thus some colours reflect different lights to others thus green appears to be blue to some and vice versa.
Colour Wheel- The colour wheel we see was invented by Sir Issac Newtown through his spectrum of light work
Primary colors - The most basic colors: are red, blue, and yellow. These colours cannot be produced by mixing but are used to mix all other colours. this was given by Leonardo da Vinci.
Secondary colours – Colours that are made by mixing equal parts of two primary colours. Orange, green, and purple are secondary colours.
Tertiary colours – Colours that are made by mixing equal parts of a primary colour and a secondary colour. Red-purple, blue-purple, red-orange, yellow-orange, blue-green, and yellow-green are tertiary colours
Neutral colours – Black and white are neutral colours. When these colors are mixed with other colors on the color wheel they affect the value and intensity of the color. e.g when black is added to red - it gives a dark shade, similarly when white is added to red it gives red tint .

Colour Scheme- It refers to a selection of colours used together in a design, artwork, or any visual presentation. The purpose of a colour scheme is to create an aesthetic arrangement and evoke certain emotions or responses from viewers.
Monochromatic – means one (mono) colour. So a monochromatic colour scheme is made up of one colour and it’s shades and tints.
Complementary Colours – Colours that are positioned directly across from each other on the colour wheel. Ex. Blue and orange, red and green, yellow-green and red-purple
Analogous Colors – are colours next to each other on the colour wheel. Ex. Blue, blue-green, green, and yellow-green; red, red-purple, purple, blue-purple.
Colour Triads – consist of three colours found on the colour wheel that are equally spaced apart from each other. Ex. Red, blue and yellow or orange, green and purple.
Split-Complementary – a colour scheme that is made up of a colour and it complements the closest analogous colours. Ex-Blue, yellow-orange and red-orange. Red-orange, red-purple, green
Warm Colors – colours that are usually associated with warm things. Ex. Red, yellow, orange
Cool Colors – colours that are usually associated with cool things. Ex. Blue, purple, green
